Server Side GTM Configuration

Importing GTM & SGTM Configurations with Kixell Tag

To configure Google Tag Manager Server Side (SGTM), you need to create two configurations: a Client Side (GTM) configuration and a Server Side (SGTM) configuration. To manage the server required for SGTM configuration deployment, you can use solutions like AddingWell, manage your server yourself via GCP (Google Cloud Platform), or any other deployment that suits your needs. Feel free to contact us for any support requests.

Client Side GTM Configuration

Creating a New Client Side (GTM) Configuration

  1. Go to the Admin tab of Google Tag Manager.
  2. Select Import Container.
  3. Click Choose Container File and select the previously downloaded JSON file.
  4. Opt to create a new workspace by clicking New.
  5. Enter a name for the workspace, for example, Kixell Tag, and click Save.
  6. Choose the Overwrite option for the import.
  7. Confirm your choice by clicking Confirm.
  8. Go to the new workspace, then open the Folders section and select the ⚙️ K - Parameters folder.
  9. Edit the variable - K - Available domains - [kt] to add and activate the domains where you want the configuration to be applied.
  10. Edit the variable - K - SGTM URL Transport - [kt] to add and match the domains of the websites with the domains pointing to the SGTM server.
  11. Save the changes made to your configuration.

Updating an Existing GTM Configuration

It is recommended to import the JSON file into a new Google Tag Manager workspace. You have two options when importing this file, depending on the complexity of your current configuration:

Select Overwrite

The configuration will be overwritten, and you will need to transfer the specific configurations of the default workspace.

Select Merge

The configuration will be merged, and you will need to check that your specific configurations are functional and that you do not have duplicate tags.

Note: Regardless of your choice, before finalizing, click Preview to test and verify that the updated configuration works correctly.

Server Side GTM Configuration (SGTM)

Creating a New Server Side (SGTM) Configuration

If you have not yet created the Server container:

  1. Go to the Admin tab of Google Tag Manager if you are in a workspace and click the + button in the Containers column or click Create Container if you are on the main interface.
  2. Select Server in the target platforms, give a name to your new container, and click Create.
  3. Upon creating the container or by clicking on the GTM-XXXXXX link in the header, a window will open asking you to Set up a server. You have two options:
    • Automatically provision the tagging server: Follow the procedure and configure your server linked to Google Cloud Platform.
    • Manually provision the tagging server: An ID will be provided (also found by clicking on GTM-XXXXXX in the header) which you will use to configure your server via third-party platforms like AddingWell.

Note: Regardless of the method listed above, you need to create the server for your container to be deployed. Without this, your Server Side tracking will not work.

Configure your SGTM container by importing the provided JSON file:

  9. Edit the variables in this folder according to the activated trackers to enter the API keys of the different platforms: Meta (Facebook), Pinterest, TikTok, Snapchat, or Matomo.

Note: Before finalizing, click Preview on both your containers (Client Side and Server Side) to test and verify that the configurations work correctly.

Important: Once everything is in place and verified, click Publish in both your containers (Client Side and Server Side) for your configuration to take effect and be visible on your site.
